Overview

Atomoxetine + methylphenidate is a combination therapy used off-label for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), particularly in patients who do not respond adequately to monotherapy with either agent or cannot tolerate higher doses of stimulants. Atomoxetine is a selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, while methylphenidate acts as a norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitor. The combination aims to leverage the distinct mechanisms of action to enhance therapeutic efficacy and manage symptoms more effectively than either drug alone. Clinical reports and small studies suggest that this combination can be effective and generally well tolerated, though side effects such as irritability, appetite reduction, palpitations, and headache have been observed[1][2][5]. Both drugs are approved individually for ADHD but their combined use remains investigational.
