Overview
Atorvastatin is a small molecule HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (statin) being investigated as an adjunct to antiretroviral therapy (ART) in the STAR trial (NCT03037372) led by Makerere University. The study evaluates the efficacy of atorvastatin in reducing chronic immune activation, systemic inflammation, and premature immune aging in HIV-infected adults in Sub-Saharan Africa. While atorvastatin is primarily indicated for hypercholesterolemia, its pleiotropic anti-inflammatory effects are hypothesized to mitigate the non-AIDS complications associated with chronic HIV infection, such as cardiovascular disease and immune exhaustion. In this context, it is typically administered orally as a daily adjunct to standard ART regimens.
