Atorvastatin + fluoxetine is a combination of two approved small molecule drugs, each with distinct mechanisms of action. Atorvastatin is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (statin) used primarily to lower cholesterol and reduce cardiovascular risk. It works by inhibiting the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which plays a central role in the production of cholesterol in the liver. Fluoxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant that increases serotonin levels in the brain by inhibiting its reuptake into presynaptic cells, thereby improving mood and treating conditions such as major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, bulimia nervosa, panic disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder[3][4]. There are no known clinically significant interactions between atorvastatin and fluoxetine when co-administered[1][2][7].
