Overview

Atorvastatin + oral contraceptive refers to the coadministration of atorvastatin, a statin medication used to lower cholesterol and reduce cardiovascular risk, with an oral contraceptive (birth control pill), which is typically a combination of estrogen and progestin hormones used for pregnancy prevention. Atorvastatin works by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme in cholesterol biosynthesis, thereby reducing LDL cholesterol and triglycerides while increasing HDL cholesterol. Oral contraceptives act primarily by suppressing ovulation through negative feedback on the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. When taken together, atorvastatin may increase blood levels of certain hormones from oral contraceptives (such as ethinyl estradiol or norethindrone), potentially raising the risk of side effects from birth control pills; however, this interaction does not compromise contraceptive efficacy[1][3][5]. The combination is not a fixed-dose product but rather describes concurrent use.
