Overview

Atorvastatin + quinapril is a combination of two small molecule drugs used primarily for cardiovascular risk reduction. Atorvastatin is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (statin) that lowers cholesterol by inhibiting the enzyme responsible for cholesterol synthesis in the liver, thereby reducing low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and overall cardiovascular risk. Quinapril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor prodrug that, after conversion to its active form quinaprilat, inhibits ACE activity, leading to decreased formation of angiotensin II—a potent vasoconstrictor—and reduced aldosterone secretion. This results in vasodilation and lowered blood pressure. The combination has been studied for additive or synergistic effects on slowing blood coagulation and reducing thrombotic events in patients with coronary artery disease[1]. Both agents are approved individually for indications such as hypertension, heart failure (quinapril), and hyperlipidemia/cardiovascular event prevention (atorvastatin). The fixed-dose combination may be considered when both lipid-lowering and antihypertensive therapy are indicated.
