Overview

Atorvastatin + rosuvastatin is a combination of two statin medications, both of which are HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors used to lower cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Atorvastatin and rosuvastatin act by competitively inhibiting the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which catalyzes the conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonate, a key step in cholesterol biosynthesis. This inhibition leads to decreased hepatic cholesterol synthesis, upregulation of hepatic LDL receptors, increased clearance of LDL from plasma, and reduced synthesis of very low density lipoprotein (VLDL). Both drugs are primarily indicated for hypercholesterolemia and prevention of cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke. Combination therapy has been studied for potential additive effects on lipid lowering in patients with coronary artery disease or at high risk for cardiovascular events[3][5][6]. However, using these two statins together may increase the risk of adverse effects such as nerve damage[1].
