Atovaquone + azithromycin is a combination therapy primarily used for the treatment of babesiosis, a tick-borne parasitic infection. This regimen has been shown to be as effective as the alternative combination of clindamycin and quinine but is associated with significantly fewer adverse reactions. The combination works by targeting the Babesia parasites through different mechanisms, with atovaquone interfering with electron transport in parasite mitochondria and azithromycin inhibiting protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit.
