Overview

Atropine + isoprenaline is a combination drug that utilizes the complementary pharmacological effects of both medications. Atropine is a selective antagonist of cholinergic receptors M1 and M2 that reverses the inhibitory effect of the vagal nerve on the myocardium, improving sinus node automatism and conduction in the atrioventricular node. Isoprenaline (also known as isoproterenol) is a non-selective beta adrenergic receptor agonist with preferential activity at beta-1 receptors, producing bathmotropic and chronotropic effects. When administered together, both drugs increase cardiac output but through different mechanisms - atropine by blocking parasympathetic effects and isoprenaline by directly stimulating beta receptors. This combination is used in the evaluation of asymptomatic sinus bradycardia and for diagnostic purposes during electrophysiological studies.
