Overview

Atropine + propofol is a combination of two small molecule drugs used together primarily in anesthesia practice. Atropine is a competitive, reversible antagonist of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors, commonly used to treat bradycardia and reduce secretions during surgery. Propofol is an intravenous hypnotic agent that acts as a gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor agonist, widely used for induction and maintenance of general anesthesia or sedation. When administered together, atropine may be given to counteract the bradycardia sometimes induced by propofol during anesthesia induction. This combination can help maintain hemodynamic stability by preventing parasympathetic-mediated decreases in heart rate associated with propofol administration[1][4][10]. Both agents are included on the World Health Organization List of Essential Medicines.
