atropine + scopolamine is a pharmacological combination of two naturally occurring tropane alkaloids found in plants of the Solanaceae family. Both agents function as competitive antagonists at muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (M1 through M5), effectively blocking the action of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the central and peripheral nervous systems. Atropine is primarily utilized for its ability to increase heart rate and reduce smooth muscle spasms, while scopolamine (also known as hyoscine) is distinguished by its potent central nervous system effects, including sedation and the prevention of motion-induced nausea. Clinically, this combination is employed as a pre-anesthetic medication to inhibit salivary and bronchial secretions and to prevent bradycardia during surgery. It is also used in palliative care to manage excessive respiratory secretions and in the treatment of various gastrointestinal motility disorders.
