Overview

The attenuated measles vaccine is a live-virus preparation traditionally used for immunization against measles, which is being investigated by Soroka University Medical Center as an oncolytic viral therapy for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). This specific application focuses on consolidation therapy for patients with stage 3B or 4 NSCLC who have achieved remission after standard chemotherapy. The vaccine virus, typically derived from the Edmonston strain, preferentially infects tumor cells by binding to overexpressed cell surface receptors such as CD46 (membrane cofactor protein). Once inside, the virus replicates, induces cell-to-cell fusion (syncytia formation), and triggers immunogenic cell death, which helps to prime the immune system against residual cancer cells and potentially prevent recurrence.
