This is an autologous cell therapy consisting of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AD-MSCs) cultured as three-dimensional spheroids and preconditioned with matrilin-3 (MATN3). Matrilin-3 is a non-collagenous extracellular matrix protein that plays a crucial role in the development and homeostasis of cartilage and intervertebral discs. The spheroid culture mimics the 3D microenvironment, enhancing cell-cell interactions and paracrine signaling, while MATN3 pretreatment is designed to promote chondrogenic differentiation and increase the cells' resistance to the inflammatory and hypoxic environment of a degenerated disc. Developed by Inbo Han at CHA University, this therapy is being investigated for the treatment of chronic low back pain associated with lumbar intervertebral disc degeneration.
