Overview

Autologous adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AD-MSCs) is an investigational cell therapy being developed by The Foundation for Orthopaedics and Regenerative Medicine for the treatment of traumatic spinal cord injury. The therapy involves the surgical extraction of a patient's own adipose (fat) tissue, from which mesenchymal stem cells are isolated, cultured, and expanded in a laboratory setting. These expanded cells are then administered back to the patient via intrathecal injection into the cerebrospinal fluid. The therapeutic mechanism is believed to be multifactorial, involving the secretion of paracrine factors that modulate the neuroinflammatory response, provide neuroprotection to damaged tissues, and stimulate endogenous repair mechanisms to improve neurological and functional outcomes.
