Overview

Autologous adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AD-MSCs) are an investigational cell therapy developed by Saglik Bilimleri Universitesi Gulhane Tip Fakultesi for the treatment of liver cirrhosis secondary to chronic Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. The therapy involves harvesting mesenchymal stem cells from the patient's own adipose tissue, followed by expansion and repeated re-infusion. The treatment protocol utilizes a dual-route administration: a portion of the cells is delivered intravenously via a peripheral vein, while a larger dose is administered directly into the right hepatic artery. The therapeutic rationale is based on the ability of MSCs to migrate to damaged liver tissue and exert immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and pro-regenerative effects, potentially promoting hepatocyte regeneration and reducing fibrosis as an alternative to liver transplantation.
