This investigational cell-based therapy, developed by Odense University Hospital, utilizes freshly isolated autologous adipose-derived regenerative cells (ADRCs) in combination with fat grafting (lipotransfer) for the treatment of breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL). The ADRCs, which comprise a heterogeneous population of stem cells, progenitor cells, and endothelial cells, are isolated from the patient's own adipose tissue using the automated Celution System. The resulting cell suspension is mixed with lipoaspirate and injected into the affected axillary region. The mechanism of action is primarily attributed to the paracrine secretion of various growth factors and cytokines that promote lymphangiogenesis, improve local vascularity, and reduce fibrosis, thereby facilitating lymphatic drainage and reducing limb volume.
