Overview

Autologous adipose-derived stromal vascular fraction (ADSVF) is an investigational cell therapy developed by Assistance Publique Hopitaux De Marseille (AP-HM) for the treatment of recurrent bulbar urethral stenosis. The therapy involves the extraction of a patient's own adipose tissue via lipoaspiration, which is then processed to isolate the stromal vascular fraction (SVF). This fraction contains a heterogeneous population of cells, including mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), endothelial progenitor cells, and pericytes, which possess regenerative, pro-angiogenic, and anti-fibrotic properties. In the SURF Phase 2 clinical trial, ADSVF is administered via intralesional injection into the fibrotic urethral lesion as an adjuvant to standard endoscopic urethrotomy. The therapeutic goal is to leverage the paracrine signaling and regenerative potential of the injected cells to modulate the wound-healing process, favor tissue regeneration over fibrosis, and ultimately reduce the high rate of stricture recurrence.
