Overview

This is an investigational autologous cell therapy developed by the Mayo Clinic for the treatment of aerodigestive and enterocutaneous fistulae. The active component is the stromal vascular fraction (SVF), a heterogeneous mixture of cells including adipose-derived stem cells, pericytes, endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells, and fibroblasts, isolated from the patient's own adipose tissue via liposuction and enzymatic digestion. The SVF is prepared fresh without cell culture expansion and is applied endoscopically to the fistula site in combination with TISSEEL, a fibrin sealant. The therapy aims to promote tissue healing and closure of fistulae secondary to malignancy, trauma, or surgery, and is currently being evaluated in a Phase 1 pilot study (NCT03792360).
