Autologous adipose-derived stromal vascular fraction (SVF) is a cell-based therapy being developed by Shanghai East Hospital for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. SVF is a heterogeneous mixture of cells obtained from the enzymatic or mechanical processing of a patient's own lipoaspirate, containing adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs), endothelial progenitor cells, pericytes, and various immune cells. When delivered via intra-articular injection, these cells are thought to exert therapeutic effects through the secretion of anti-inflammatory cytokines and growth factors, promoting tissue repair and modulating the joint environment to reduce pain and improve function. The therapy is specifically being evaluated in patients with Kellgren-Lawrence grade II or III osteoarthritis.
