Autologous adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AD-MSCs) is a cell therapy developed by Bukwang Pharmaceutical for the treatment of spinal cord injury. The therapy involves harvesting a patient's own adipose tissue, isolating the mesenchymal stem cells, and expanding them ex vivo before re-administering them to the patient via intrathecal injection. These stem cells are thought to exert therapeutic effects through paracrine signaling, secreting a variety of neurotrophic and immunomodulatory factors that reduce neuroinflammation, promote the survival of existing neurons, and potentially facilitate axonal regeneration and remyelination at the site of injury. A Phase 1 clinical trial was conducted in South Korea to evaluate the safety and preliminary efficacy of this approach in patients with spinal cord injuries.
