Autologous blood injection (ABI) is a biologic therapy being investigated for the treatment of lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow). In the specific protocol evaluated by Istanbul Training and Research Hospital, the treatment consists of 1 ml of the patient's own venous blood mixed with 2 ml of 2% prilocaine HCl, which is injected locally at the site of the lateral epicondyle tendinosis. The therapeutic rationale is that the growth factors and cytokines present in whole blood can stimulate a localized inflammatory response and promote the healing and regeneration of degenerative tendon tissue. Prilocaine is included as a local anesthetic to mitigate pain during the injection procedure. This approach is being compared to corticosteroid injections and combination therapies to determine its relative efficacy in improving pain and functional outcomes.
