This is an autologous cell therapy developed by Arteriocyte (now Isto Biologics) using the Magellan Autologous Concentration System. The therapy involves the preparation and administration of a combination of autologous bone marrow cell concentrate (BMCC) and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) gel. It is specifically designed for the treatment of compartment syndrome and battlefield trauma, conditions where increased pressure within muscle compartments compromises circulation and can lead to critical limb ischemia. The therapy works by delivering a high concentration of hematopoietic stem cells and platelets to the site of injury, which release essential growth factors such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), and stromal cell-derived factor 1 (SDF-1). These factors promote neovascularization, improve tissue perfusion, and enhance the healing of wounds, bone, and soft tissue. The Magellan system is a point-of-care device that automates the concentration process from the patient's own bone marrow and blood. The therapy was evaluated in a Phase I clinical trial (NCT01837264, Magellan MAR01 study).
