Overview

This investigational cell therapy consists of autologous bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) developed by researchers at the Third Military Medical University (Southwest Hospital) in Chongqing, China. It is specifically designed for the treatment of type 2 diabetic patients suffering from critical limb ischemia (CLI) and chronic foot ulcers. The therapy involves harvesting the patient's own mesenchymal stem cells from bone marrow, which are then expanded and administered via multiple intramuscular injections into the affected lower limb. The biological mechanism of action relies on the regenerative and paracrine properties of the MSCs, which secrete pro-angiogenic factors and cytokines that promote angiogenesis, improve local limb perfusion, and accelerate the healing of chronic ulcers. Clinical trial results have indicated that BM-MSC transplantation is more effective than bone marrow-derived mononuclear cells (BM-MNCs) or saline in improving clinical parameters such as the ankle-brachial index (ABI), transcutaneous oxygen pressure (TcO2), and overall ulcer healing rates.
