This investigational therapy consists of autologous bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) developed by researchers at Hospital Clínico San Carlos in Madrid for the treatment of full-thickness rotator cuff tears. The treatment protocol involves harvesting MSCs from the patient's bone marrow, expanding them in vitro, and then surgically implanting approximately 20 million cells seeded onto a collagen membrane scaffold (such as the OrthADAPT membrane) into the site of the supraspinatus tendon tear. The therapy is designed to enhance the biological healing of the tendon-to-bone interface, leveraging the regenerative and immunomodulatory potential of MSCs to improve functional outcomes and reduce the high rates of re-rupture typically seen with conventional surgical repair techniques.
