Overview

This is an investigational autologous cell therapy developed by Hospital São Rafael in Salvador, Brazil, for the treatment of chronic spinal cord injury. The therapy involves the extraction of bone marrow from the patient, followed by the isolation and expansion of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in a certified cGMP facility. These expanded cells are then transplanted back into the patient via direct intralesional injection into the spinal cord lesion site. The mechanism of action is thought to involve the secretion of neurotrophic and growth factors, modulation of the local inflammatory environment, and promotion of axonal regeneration and remyelination to facilitate neurological repair. Clinical evaluation has focused on patients with chronic complete thoracolumbar spinal cord injury (ASIA grade A).
