Overview

This investigational cell therapy, developed by the Royan Institute in Iran, consists of autologous, culture-expanded bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs). Administered via intra-articular injection, the therapy is intended for the treatment of moderate to severe knee osteoarthritis. Its mechanism of action relies on the immunomodulatory properties of MSCs, which help control inflammation by acting on T lymphocytes, and the paracrine secretion of regenerative factors that promote the resurfacing of damaged articular cartilage. Clinical data from the RIMRO-TriaL suggests that the treatment is safe and effective in reducing pain and functional impairment in patients with knee osteoarthritis.
