This investigational cell-based therapy, developed by Rush University Medical Center, utilizes autologous bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) to augment arthroscopic repair of full-thickness rotator cuff tears. The procedure involves extracting bone marrow from the patient's hip, concentrating the MSCs via centrifugation, and injecting the resulting concentrate into the tendon-bone junction and the surgical footprint. These MSCs facilitate healing by differentiating into specialized cell types such as tenocytes, chondrocytes, and osteoblasts, while also secreting essential growth factors that promote tissue regeneration and enhance the structural integrity of the tendon-to-bone interface.
