Overview

Autologous bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) represent a cell therapy approach developed by the University of Helsinki for treating ischemic heart failure. The therapeutic process involves the extraction of bone marrow from the patient's iliac crest, followed by the isolation of MSCs using Ficoll density gradient centrifugation. These cells are then administered via intramyocardial injection directly into the heart tissue during coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery. The primary objective of this intervention is to enhance myocardial function and promote tissue regeneration in patients with a history of myocardial infarction and significant left ventricular dysfunction (LVEF 15-45%). The therapy is hypothesized to work through paracrine mechanisms that stimulate angiogenesis and reduce fibrotic remodeling.
