Overview

This is an investigational autologous cell therapy developed by Yamaguchi University Hospital for the treatment of decompensated liver cirrhosis. The therapy involves the extraction of approximately 30 mL of bone marrow from the patient, followed by a three-week ex vivo expansion of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) at the hospital's Center for Regenerative and Cell Therapy. The expanded cells are then administered via peripheral intravenous infusion. The treatment aims to promote liver regeneration and reduce fibrosis through paracrine signaling and immunomodulatory effects that support hepatocyte function. It was developed as a less invasive alternative to earlier autologous bone marrow cell infusion therapies that required general anesthesia and larger volumes of bone marrow.
