Overview

Autologous bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) are an experimental cell therapy developed by the National University of Malaysia for the treatment of mild to moderate osteoarthritis. This therapeutic approach involves harvesting a patient's own bone marrow, isolating and expanding the mesenchymal stem cells ex vivo, and subsequently re-injecting them into the affected joint. In clinical trials, these cells are often administered in a carrier of hyaluronic acid (specifically Orthovisc) to improve cell retention and provide joint lubrication. The mechanism of action is believed to involve the secretion of bioactive factors that modulate the intra-articular inflammatory environment, reduce chondrocyte apoptosis, and potentially stimulate the regeneration of damaged articular cartilage.
