Overview

This autologous bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cell (BMMSC) therapy was developed at the Cardiology Stem Cell Centre at Rigshospitalet, University of Copenhagen. The treatment involves harvesting a patient's own bone marrow, from which mesenchymal stromal cells are isolated and culture-expanded for 6-8 weeks. During the expansion process, the cells are stimulated with vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) to facilitate endothelial differentiation and enhance their vasculogenic potential. The final cell product is delivered via direct intramyocardial injection into ischemic but viable regions of the heart. This biologic therapy is specifically designed for patients with severe chronic myocardial ischemia and refractory angina who have exhausted all other revascularization options. Clinical studies have demonstrated that the therapy is safe and feasible, leading to sustained improvements in clinical symptoms and a reduction in hospital admissions.
