Overview

This is an investigational autologous cell therapy consisting of culture-expanded bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (BM-MSCs) for the treatment of moderate to advanced knee osteoarthritis. Developed by Dr. Jaskarndip Chahal and colleagues at the University Health Network and University of Toronto, the therapy involves harvesting a patient's own bone marrow, expanding the MSCs in culture, and re-administering them via intra-articular injection. The cells exert therapeutic effects through immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory mechanisms, secreting paracrine factors that reduce synovial inflammation and decrease biomarkers of cartilage degradation. Clinical trials have evaluated doses up to 50 million cells, demonstrating safety and improvements in pain and joint function.
