Overview

This investigational cell therapy consists of autologous bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (BM-MSCs) developed by Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) for the treatment of severe pulmonary emphysema. The therapy involves the isolation and ex vivo expansion of a patient's own MSCs from bone marrow aspirate, which are then administered intravenously. The proposed mechanism of action involves the cells' ability to modulate the inflammatory response and stimulate endogenous repair mechanisms in damaged alveolar tissue. In a Phase I safety and feasibility study (NCT01306513), the treatment was administered to patients undergoing lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS). Results indicated that the procedure is safe and feasible, with treated patients showing increased expression of the endothelial marker CD31 in alveolar septa, suggesting a positive effect on the lung microvasculature.
