Overview

**Autologous bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells** are an investigational, patient-specific cell therapy developed by Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research for insulin-requiring type 2 diabetes mellitus. Bone marrow is aspirated from each patient, mononuclear cells are isolated and cultured to expand the adherent mesenchymal stromal-cell population, and the resulting cells are delivered by targeted infusion into the superior pancreaticoduodenal artery. The proposed activity is regenerative and paracrine rather than receptor-specific: the cells are intended to improve the pancreatic microenvironment, promote angiogenic and trophic signaling, support residual beta-cell function, and improve insulin sensitivity. In the randomized controlled study, this MSC intervention was evaluated separately from autologous bone marrow-derived mononuclear cells and sham treatment.
