Overview

Autologous bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells are an investigational, patient-specific **stem cell therapy** developed by National University of Malaysia for mild-to-moderate knee osteoarthritis. Bone marrow is harvested from the individual patient, and the mesenchymal stromal cell population is expanded before intra-articular administration. The intended therapeutic activity is regenerative and disease-modifying rather than solely symptomatic: the cells may support cartilage repair through chondrogenic differentiation potential and paracrine trophic, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory effects within the osteoarthritic joint. This exact National University of Malaysia program was evaluated in the randomized, open-label Phase 2 trial NCT01459640.
