Overview

Autologous bone marrow-derived mononuclear cells (BM-MNCs) are an investigational cell therapy developed by the Tehran University of Medical Sciences for the treatment of ocular lesions in Behcet's Disease. The therapy involves the extraction of bone marrow from the patient's iliac crest, followed by the isolation and expansion of mononuclear cells, including mesenchymal stem cells. These cells are characterized by the expression of markers such as CD90, CD44, CD105, and CD166. The cells are administered via intravitreal injection, where they are hypothesized to exert immunomodulatory and regenerative effects to halt or reverse the progression of intractable inflammatory eye lesions.
