Autologous bone marrow-derived stem cells (BMSCs) are an investigational cell therapy developed by King Saud University for the treatment of advanced liver cirrhosis. The therapeutic process involves the mobilization of stem cells from the patient's own bone marrow, typically using Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), followed by collection and subsequent infusion into the hepatic artery. This approach aims to improve liver function and stabilize patients with end-stage liver disease, potentially serving as a bridge to liver transplantation. The BMSCs are hypothesized to promote liver regeneration and reduce fibrosis through paracrine signaling, the secretion of trophic factors, and immunomodulatory effects within the hepatic microenvironment.
