This investigational cell therapy, often referred to by the protocol name MSV, consists of autologous bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) expanded under Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) conditions and delivered within an autologous plasma matrix. Developed by the Spanish Red de Terapia Celular (Cell Therapy Network) and the Instituto de Biología y Genética Molecular (IBGM), the treatment is specifically designed for lumbar degenerative disc disease. The therapeutic approach involves the intradiscal injection of these expanded MSCs into the nucleus pulposus, where they are intended to regenerate the disc matrix, restore mechanical function, and alleviate chronic back pain. Clinical studies, including a Phase I/II pilot trial, have demonstrated the feasibility and safety of this approach, showing significant improvements in pain and disability scores in patients with chronic back pain from lumbar disc degeneration.
