Overview

This investigational combination therapy, developed by the Royan Institute, consists of autologous bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) and the small molecule pioglitazone for the treatment of compensated liver cirrhosis. The BM-MSCs are harvested from the patient's own bone marrow and administered via intraportal injection to utilize their immunomodulatory, anti-fibrotic, and regenerative properties. Pioglitazone, a PPAR-gamma agonist, is administered concurrently to potentially enhance the anti-fibrotic effects and improve liver function. This dual approach aims to reduce liver fibrosis and promote tissue repair in patients for whom liver transplantation is the only current definitive treatment.
