Overview

Autologous bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMMNCs) are a cell therapy product consisting of a mixture of stem and progenitor cells derived from the patient's own bone marrow. Developed by Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for the treatment of acute myocardial infarction, the therapy involves harvesting bone marrow, isolating the mononuclear fraction, and delivering the cells via intracoronary injection into the infarct-related artery shortly after a heart attack. The mechanism of action is thought to involve paracrine signaling that promotes angiogenesis, reduces apoptosis, and potentially contributes to myocardial regeneration, with the ultimate goal of improving cardiac function and preventing heart failure.
