Autologous bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMMCs) is a cell-based biologic therapy developed by CellPraxis Bioengenharia Ltda. for the treatment of refractory angina. The therapy involves harvesting mononuclear cells from the patient's own bone marrow and delivering them via direct intramyocardial injection into ischemic regions of the heart. The primary mechanism of action is therapeutic neovascularization, where the transplanted cells are hypothesized to induce neoangiogenesis (the formation of new blood vessels) in chronically ischemic cardiac tissue. This process aims to improve myocardial perfusion and reduce anginal symptoms in patients with advanced coronary artery disease who are not candidates for conventional revascularization procedures. The therapy was evaluated in the Phase II ReACT (Refractory Angina Cell Therapy) study.
