Overview

This investigational autologous cell therapy is being developed by the Federal University of Bahia for the treatment of chronic leg ulcers in patients with sickle cell disease. The therapy involves the harvesting of mononuclear cells from the patient's own bone marrow, which are then processed and injected directly into and around the site of the chronic ulcer. The mechanism of action is based on the regenerative capacity of bone marrow-derived stem cells, which promote angiogenesis, vasculogenesis, and tissue repair to heal severe vasculopathic complications. A prospective pilot study published in 2016 demonstrated the safety and feasibility of this approach in a cohort of 23 patients, showing no serious adverse events and suggesting potential efficacy in wound healing.
