Autologous bone marrow mononuclear cells (MNCs) are a cell-based biologic therapy developed by the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Fuwai Hospital, for the treatment of acute myocardial infarction. The therapy involves harvesting a patient's own bone marrow, isolating the mononuclear cell fraction, and delivering these cells via intracoronary transplantation into the infarct-related artery. The primary goal is to promote cardiac repair and regeneration, thereby improving left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) in patients with ST-elevated myocardial infarction (STEMI) and impaired ventricular function. Clinical research, specifically a Phase 2 factorial study, has explored the use of intensive statin therapy (atorvastatin) as an adjunct to improve the survival and efficacy of the transplanted cells within the ischemic environment.
