Overview

Autologous bone marrow mononuclear cell (BMMC) therapy is a cell-based biologic developed by Manipal Acunova Ltd. for the treatment of ischemic stroke. The therapy involves harvesting a patient's own bone marrow, isolating the mononuclear cell fraction—which includes hematopoietic stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells, and various progenitor cells—and re-administering them to the patient via intravenous infusion. The therapeutic effect is believed to be mediated through paracrine mechanisms, where the cells release trophic factors that reduce apoptosis, dampen peri-infarct inflammation, and promote angiogenesis and neuroprotection. This investigational therapy was evaluated in the Phase 2 InveST (Intravenous Autologous Bone Marrow Mononuclear Cell Therapy for Ischemic Stroke) trial, which assessed safety and efficacy in patients during the subacute phase of stroke (7 to 30 days post-onset).
