Overview

Autologous bone marrow-derived mononuclear cell (BM-MNC) therapy is an experimental cell-based biologic being investigated by Dr. Nasser Aghdami and the Royan Institute for the treatment of pediatric idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (IDCM). The therapy involves the collection of bone marrow from the patient, followed by the isolation of the mononuclear cell fraction, which includes various progenitor cell populations such as hematopoietic stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells, and endothelial progenitor cells. These cells are then delivered directly into the coronary arteries via intracoronary transplantation. The therapeutic intent is to promote myocardial repair and improve cardiac function, likely through paracrine mechanisms where the transplanted cells release angiogenic and anti-apoptotic factors that support the failing heart muscle and modulate the inflammatory environment.
