Overview

This autologous bone marrow mononuclear cell (BMMNC) therapy is a cell-based biologic developed by The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth Houston) for the treatment of severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) in pediatric patients. The therapy involves the harvest of bone marrow from the patient followed by the intravenous infusion of isolated mononuclear progenitor cells within 24 to 48 hours of injury. The mechanism of action is primarily immunomodulatory, aimed at downregulating the systemic inflammatory response to injury. Specifically, the cells help preserve the integrity of the blood-brain barrier, attenuate neuroinflammation by reducing the activation of microglia and macrophages, and promote the preservation of white matter and structural connectivity in the brain. Clinical trials have demonstrated the safety and feasibility of this approach, showing potential for improved functional outcomes and reduced intensive care requirements in children with severe TBI.
