This autologous cell therapy combination, developed by the National University of Malaysia (UKM), consists of bone marrow-derived mononuclear cells (BM-MNC) and bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSC). It is specifically designed for patients with chronic critical limb ischemia (CLI) who have exhausted conventional revascularization options. The therapy is administered via multiple intramuscular injections into the ischemic limb. The mechanism of action relies on the synergistic effects of the two cell populations: BM-MNCs provide a diverse population of progenitor cells (including hematopoietic and endothelial progenitors), while BM-MSCs serve as potent paracrine regulators, secreting a cocktail of pro-angiogenic growth factors such as VEGF, FGF, and HGF. This combined approach aims to stimulate neovascularization, improve distal perfusion, and promote wound healing, thereby reducing the risk of amputation.
