Overview

Autologous bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMMNCs) are a cell-based biologic therapy developed by the NeuroGen Brain and Spine Institute for the treatment of various incurable neurological disorders. The therapy involves harvesting bone marrow from the patient's own iliac crest, isolating the mononuclear cell fraction—which contains a mixture of hematopoietic stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells, and endothelial progenitor cells—and transplanting them back into the patient via intrathecal injection. The therapeutic mechanism is primarily paracrine, involving the secretion of neurotrophic factors such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and nerve growth factor (NGF), as well as angiogenic factors like vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). these factors promote neuroprotection, immunomodulation, angiogenesis, and endogenous neural repair. The therapy has been investigated in clinical trials for conditions including cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorder, spinal cord injury, and muscular dystrophy.
