Autologous cardiac stem cells (CSCs) developed by the Royan Institute are an investigational cell therapy for the treatment of ischemic heart failure. The therapy involves the isolation of resident stem cells from a patient's own cardiac tissue, followed by ex vivo expansion and subsequent intracoronary re-infusion. The mechanism of action is thought to involve the promotion of myocardial regeneration and the improvement of left ventricular function through both direct differentiation into cardiac lineages and the secretion of paracrine factors that stimulate endogenous repair mechanisms, reduce fibrosis, and enhance angiogenesis.
