Overview

Autologous CD133+ bone marrow cells are an investigational cell therapy product consisting of a purified population of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) harvested from a patient's own bone marrow. These cells are enriched for the CD133 (Prominin-1) surface marker, a glycoprotein associated with primitive stem cells that possess high angiogenic and vasculogenic potential. The treatment involves harvesting bone marrow, typically via aspiration, followed by magnetic bead-based selection of CD133+ cells. These cells are then delivered via direct intramyocardial injection into the border zone of infarcted or ischemic myocardium, often during coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. The therapeutic mechanism relies on the cells' ability to home to ischemic regions and release paracrine factors (such as VEGF) that promote neovascularization, limit cardiomyocyte apoptosis, and potentially support myocardial regeneration, thereby aiming to improve left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and cardiac perfusion in patients with chronic ischemic heart disease and heart failure.
