Overview

Autologous CD133+ hematopoietic progenitor cells are a specific population of stem cells harvested from a patient's own bone marrow or peripheral blood, characterized by the presence of the CD133 (prominin-1) surface marker. CD133 identifies a highly primitive subset of hematopoietic stem cells and endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) that are believed to possess superior pro-angiogenic and regenerative potential compared to the more common CD34+ population. Once isolated, typically using automated magnetic cell separation technologies like the CliniMACS system, these cells are delivered to ischemic or damaged tissues, such as the myocardium in patients with refractory angina or the lower limbs in those with critical limb ischemia. The therapeutic mechanism involves both the direct differentiation of progenitor cells into vascular components (vasculogenesis) and the secretion of a wide array of paracrine factors, including cytokines and growth factors, that stimulate the formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis) and promote tissue repair. Development of this cell therapy has primarily been led by academic institutions in collaboration with technology providers like Miltenyi Biotec.
